Having a healthy diet is always a good thing, especially when you’re carrying a child. However, most diets tend to not include enough of each vitamin. This is what prenatal vitamins are for — to fill any nutritional holes in your diet. As for the vitamins themselves, they are comprised of various vitamins and minerals. The most notable and important ones are iodine, iron, folic acid and calcium.
What Should You Look for in a Prenatal Vitamin?
There is a slew of prenatal vitamins that you can take. However, every pregnant mother is different and may require certain vitamins.
In general, it’s important that you keep an eye out for the following:
• 400 IU of vitamin D
• 70 mg of vitamin C
• 20 mg niacin
• 6 mcg of vitamin B12
• 17 mg of iron
• 15 mg of zinc
On a side note, if you’re lacking a certain type of vitamin, your physician may end up prescribing you a specific type of prenatal vitamin.
Eating a Healthy Diet
Constantly snacking on fruits and vegetables is not only beneficial to you; it’s also beneficial to your baby. Many types of produce contain antioxidants, which help prevent damage to your baby’s brain tissue.
Produce such as papaya, tomatoes, blueberries and leafy greens will offer you the most antioxidants. As always, be sure to wash the fruit and vegetables thoroughly, including ones that have a rind.
Eating right and taking prenatal vitamins gives your baby the best chance of being born healthy and happy.
