Ultrasounds, also known as sonography, rely on high-frequency sound waves that are translated into images. Ultrasounds are extremely safe and have been most commonly associated with prenatal care to observe the fetus.
But, there are many other common types of ultrasounds used in the medical industry. Here at WFMC Health, we provide comprehensive health care for families, mothers, and children. Read on to learn four common types of ultrasounds to know about.
This type of ultrasound is used to examine organs located in the abdominal area, such as the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and more. An abdominal ultrasound can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions and examine the damage done by certain illnesses. An abdominal ultrasound uses real-time imaging, which means it can also be used for other things like guiding procedures and identifying blockages to blood flow.
Pelvic Ultrasound Imaging
This is one of the most common types of ultrasounds used to monitor the health of an embryo or fetus during pregnancy. A pelvic ultrasound is also used to examine the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and prostate gland.
To get this type of ultrasound, patients will need to have a full bladder. With a transabdominal ultrasound, patients will lie on their back while a gel is applied to their abdomen. A transducer is rubbed over the abdomen and releases sound waves.
In order to receive a transvaginal ultrasound, the bladder must be completely emptied. The patient will lie face up on their back with their feet in stirrups.
The transducer will be inserted with a protective cover and lubrications so the area can be examined. Keep in mind that this tool is smaller than the standard speculum used in a pap smear.
