Pregnancy can be a joy, but it can also put a strain on a relationship. Your partner is probably experiencing the hallmark symptoms of pregnancy: morning sickness, mood swings, bloating, discomfort, and bizarre cravings. It’s a tough burden to bear, and she can’t do it alone. Here are some tips on supporting your partner during her pregnancy to make it a little easier for her.
1. Show Interest in Her Pregnancy
Too often, people take a hands-off approach to their partner’s pregnancy. They’re not the ones carrying the child, so why should they learn about the different stages? If you follow your partner’s pregnancy along with her, though, she’ll feel like she’s not alone in this journey. Accompany her on appointments (if your schedules work out), read about the different stages of pregnancy, and stay educated so that you can sympathize with her throughout the process.
2. Assist Her When She Needs Help
Your partner is trying her best. Sometimes, we get frustrated when our partner sneaks out of the movie for the fifth time to use the restroom. Just remember, though, that she’s carrying a growing child, and that means dealing with all the health problems and hormonal issues that come with it. Be patient and understanding, and ask her if she needs help. Just the simple act of asking her what she needs can brighten her entire day.
3. Listen When She Needs to Vent
You might not be the one carrying the child, but that doesn’t mean you can’t empathize. Let her know that she can vent to you when she’s feeling stressed and uncomfortable. Is she sore? Nauseated? Feeling depressed? Sometimes it’s tempting to avoid this duty, thinking “That’s what her friends are for.” However, she needs to know that you’re there for her every step of the way, even for the less glamorous aspects of pregnancy.
4. Join Her on Shopping Trips
You’ve got a lot of shopping ahead of you. A crib, blankets, toys, clothes, diapers, and baby formula are all needed, and that’s just for the first few months! Instead of expecting her to go alone, join her on the shopping trips and take interest in choosing the best products for your baby.
